Description

I worked in IT in a small company where someone from the legal team used to sit near us and over time we started to chat. The company was very relaxed about the dress code so everyone wore jeans etc, apart from this chap from Legal who always wore a pinstriped suit. He would often tell us how much money he had spent on various luxury items but it also became apparent he didn’t really have much of a social life, so I started to think about how he had this impressive ‘front’ with the well paid, senior job with all the benefits of being able to buy lots of expensive things, but unfortunately nobody to share it with. I decided to write the song because the guy had a very thick skin and didn’t appear to realise that some of his bragging was falling on deaf ears with the rest of us. So the intention was to write an upbeat, popular song with grim lyrics.

Lyrics

Big man in little clothes
He struts around, looks down his nose
He lords it here, he lords it there
Skin so thick, the knives really don’t tear
The littleman’s skin, why lies within?
Burning desire always to win

Oh littleman, what have you done?
Oh littleman, what have you become?
Oh littleman, you are so glum
Could you die, it would be such fun

He’s a pig, tough guy at five foot two
To him, insignificance is you
You speak when you are spoken to
Provide a service, that’s all you do
He’s on a wage that makes you sick
For all his money, his clothes don’t fit
And there’s no-one that he shares it with
He needs putting down, like a dog that’s sick

So littleman, then, what lies within?
Burning desire always to win
Oh littleman, what have you done?
Oh littleman, what have you become?
Oh littleman, you are so glum
Could you die, it would be such fun

Poor littleman loves his job too much
He’s never had the pleasure of a woman’s touch
He lives at home, aged forty-one
At night he locks the doors so he can have some fun
He’s bought all of the expensive gear
Tells anyone who wants to hear
He’s been compared to the devil before
Push him away and he comes back for more

So littleman, then, what lies within?
Burning desire always to win
Oh littleman, what have you done?
Oh littleman, what have you become?
Oh littleman, you are so glum
Could you die, it would be such fun
