Description
I was in an abusive marriage for a decade. I was degraded and talked down to daily. My husband told me my music was worthless and I should quit and get a real job. He had a double life and myself and my children were the cover for it. It took me a long time to find the resources, strength and courage to get out but I finally did and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. This song was written about 2 years after I got myself FREE. I will be celebrating my freedom from his toxic abuse for the rest of my life!
Bio
Award winning singer-songwriter Essence Goldman has been immersed in art and music since childhood. Her birth name really is ‘Essence.’ A sixth generation native of San Francisco, her parents were two free spirited bohemian artists from the Haight-Ashbury ‘Summer of Love.’ Essence has released six albums on both indie and major labels. She has had her original songs placed in both TV and film and shared the same stage with The Old Crow Medicine Show, Sheryl Crow, and Tom Petty. Her forthcoming album “Father’s Daughter” is an honest and at times humorous account of her losses and wins; to the bone and from the heart. The album is fully steeped in the rich traditions of Appalachian, Americana and Country music that Essence grew up on, with a nod to the spirit and sound of songwriting legends like John Prine, and EmmyLou Harris, Dolly Parton and Gillian Welch. It is a collection of songs that could not have been written without real life living. It is at once deeply personal and immediately relatable; emotionally vulnerable and lyrically brave.
When Essence isn’t in the studio recording or on the road playing shows she teaches voice, guitar and songwriting. Essence has received national and international acclaim on NPR and BBC for her work with one of her students by the name of Bernie Dalton. Bernie suffered from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and when he could no longer speak, sing, or use his hands to play guitar he asked Essence to become his voice and put music and melody to his words. With the help of several talented musical collaborators an album called ‘Connection’ was born and became Bernie’s musical legacy. The project was named Bernie & The Believers. “The story of Bernie and the Believers is the most powerful I’ve ever come across at the Tiny Desk.” – Bob Boilen, (host and creator of NPR’s online music show All Songs Considered and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts series.) A feature film shining light on the story and music of Bernie & The Believers featuring Essence is currently in development by Weed Road Pictures/Paramount. Essence is the founder and executive director of a non-profit called ‘Believe Music Heals’ that is dedicated to transforming lives through the healing power of music. She is also the dedicated mother to a 16 year old son and a 11 year old daughter.

Woke up this mornin
& the birds were singin’
Had a bad dream of
wedding bells ringing
standing by a cake
with a lover who never loved me
I’m a warm summer breeze
in a getaway car,
don’t know where I’m goin
but it betta be far.
All I know is I ain’t comin home to you.
I’m free, I ain’t crying about you
I’m free, I ain’t worried about you
I’m free, I’m free oh baby I’m free
I’m free, cause I’m me
I’m me, cause I’m free
I’m free, & I don’t need you
I’m cuttin your ropes
I’m breakin your chains
I’m living without you
It ain’t the same
Ain’t takin your shit
Ain’t playin your games
I’m free of your crap
I’m free of your pain
I used to choke up every time
I’d think about leaving
but I’ve got these dreams
You never I believed in
I’m over the moon
I ain’t under your spell no more
gonna head out to space
shoot for the stars
leave the past in the dust
shake the rust off my heart
When it all settles down
I’ll be ready for a brand new start
Chorus
I’m free of your guilt
Ain’t takin the blame
I’m happy without you
Walking in the rain
I’m free as a bird
I’m loose as a goose
I slipped the noose
I’m free of you———
I’m free of you (x8)
I’m free -I made it out alive
Made it to the other side
I’m free – I’m free
I might’ve stayed too long
But I’m up and gone I’m free
I’m free – baby I’m free
