Back in 2022 I read a Guardian article about people who have to be ready to get away quickly from political or religious persecution, War or abuse. These would often be journalists. They have to be ready to get away in a moments notice and I wondered what they would keep in a suitcase or overnight bag to be ready to escape with. The supermarket bags for life seemed a suitable metaphor.

Bag For Life
A smell on the breeze, rustling in the trees,
A change in our leaders, so down on your knees.
Three in the morning, knock on the door –
Here come the gunmen, grab the bag from the floor.
What do you keep in your bag for life?
A pencil, a phone, maybe a knife,
A change of clothes for the Afterlife?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
Climate change, life to re-arrange,
Find a Safe House, somewhere strange.
The river’s rising, Right Wing thriving,
New World Order, no compromising.
What do you keep in your bag for life?
A pencil, a phone, maybe a knife,
A change of clothes for the Afterlife?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
Wild fire raging, soldiers invading,
Nature’s at war, storms prevailing.
No matter where you are, memories leave scars.
Have to escape, by foot or car.
What do you keep in your bag for life?
A pencil, a phone, maybe a knife,
A change of clothes for the Afterlife?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
What do you keep in your bag for life?
